Currently, Congress is attempting to address an important issue for artists today. Specifically, Congress is trying to find a solution to the problem of “orphan works:” how a copyrighted work may be used when its owner cannot be found. The U.S. Copyright Office and members of the House and Senate are trying to find a solution that is friendly to filmmakers and small artists, but there is much debate on how best to balance the protections afforded to artists who want to make use of orphan works with the protections provided to copyright holders. A coalition of various organizations are involved in dealing with this issue, and have provided a link for those interested in finding out more and participating in the debate.
